Indian Music Spelling Bee – Chicago Preliminary

Melharmony Foundation is organizing the very first Indian Music Spelling Bee. This competition focuses on some of the most essential features and skills required by professionals, amateurs and students of any genre of Indian music including Carnatic, Hindustani, Semi-Classical, Ghazal, Devotional, Light or Film.

These skills include:
1. Ability to decode or spell any music phrase into swaras/notes,
2. Ability to coin phrases from a given set of notes/swaras,
3. Ability to identify swaras/notes of specific lyric passages,
4. Ability to identify swaras/notes played on instruments,
5. Ability to sing or play the given phrases with the right intonation (shruti), tone, texture and tempo,
6. Ability to grasp and render the right gamakams/oscillations (mainly for Carnatic & Hindustani Classical).
